The Walk to the Studio is some of Cardiff artist Martin Briggs’ most recent work. Martin is a favourite local artist of ours and here, in his own words, he explains his motivation and background to his project.
“This artwork is a sequence of three sketches, each of which has a number of vignettes. The walk from my home to my studio takes about twelve minutes and I do it most mornings.
“For the past few years I’ve mostly been sketching, painting and printing with a forthcoming exhibition in mind. Lockdown changed this. Exhibitions stopped, but I continued work in the studio. I ordered canvases and paint. I was free to paint purely for my own pleasure without thinking about how the work might be received.
“The walk to the studio became one of these pleasures, observing the changes from day to day, month to month. The three sketches record points of interest along the way. They were originally intended as studies for a large painting. Then St Canna’s Ale House, which is about the half way point, and is also my friendly local, reopened. My partner, Francis had three portrait photographs on exhibition there – they had been up all through the lockdown. I asked my host, James, if he would like some new work to which he said yes. So the sketches were immediately framed and put on display. We invited our friends for an opening.
In the meantime I have accumulated enough paintings, some 2 x 3 metres, to mount a big solo show. Where, and when, I wonder, could this be?”
