Review: Frankie & Benny’s, St David’s, Cardiff

Richard, our graphics guru, together with his better half recently visited Frankie & Benny’s in the heart of Cardiff and, as usual, it didn’t disappoint.

Richard’s a bit of a foodie and, like us, eats out a lot, so in the interest of perspective we love to share our dining experiences here at City Life; especially with readers, and certainly when they’re good.

Rich, what time did you get there?
6:45 pm. It’s a good time as it’s not too busy but there are enough diners to create a good atmosphere. Nothing worse than sitting in an empty restaurant. I doubt that would happen here though. It’s way too popular.

What did you order for starters?
Sticky Chicken Wings and Meatballs al Forno. Both were spot on; the meatballs and chicken were moist and full of flavour.

What did you order for mains?
A whole rack of Smoky Ultimate BBQ Ribs and the Dirty Dog.

Thoughts on these?
Everything was cooked perfectly and packed with flavour. The ribs were melt-in-your-mouth yummy with a juicy, garlic butter covered corn on the cob, along with some crispy sweet potato fries. The Dirty dog was piled high with cheese sauce, crispy onions and peppers bursting with flavours, accompanied by skin on fries – highly recommended. We also had some Buffalo Chicken Loaded Fries on the side because… why not? Trust me there were no regrets.

How about dessert?
We really didn’t have space for dessert, but we couldn’t resist, we went for New York Cheesecake with Salted Caramel Sauce and Classic Tiramisu.

Again, thoughts?
We thought these would be the lightest option and they didn’t disappoint, the perfect end to a perfect feast.

What did you order to drink?
We fancied a couple of cocktails, so we decided on a Porn Star Martini and a Cherry Cuba Libre. Both were very fresh and fragrant as you’d expect, I’m a huge Cuba Libre fan and this was up there with the best, I’ve since got my hands on a bottle of cherry rum.

What was the atmosphere like?
As it was a Thursday it wasn’t particularly busy, which suited us as it was quite relaxing.

And the service?
All the staff were friendly and attentive, a very welcoming arrival and helpful right through until we left.

Did you have to wait long in between servings?
Everything was served in a timely manner, I’m quite an impatient person especially when it comes to food, no complaints here.

Do you think the bill was fair for the offering?
We probably ordered more than we would usually, but all the food sounded great and looked so good that we wanted to try a few different things. The price was very reasonable especially considering how tasty everything was.

What were your thoughts overall?
We were both delighted with the quality of the food and drinks. We will definitely be returning with some friends. As I mentioned earlier, I’m a big fan of Frankie & Benny’s and this meal simply reinforced my original opinion of the restaurant.
