Cardiff has some really good farm shops and markets and, from the 29th June, residents in the west of Cardiff will have another excellent farm shop within a short driving distance. Forage Farm Shop & Kitchen will open at the Penllyn Estate Farm, just off the A48 near Cowbridge (less than 20 minutes from Ely and St Fagans, and less than 30 minutes for Cardiff city centre).

And if, after release from lockdown, the thought of a lovely, leisurely drive through the Vale doesn’t appeal, you can order from Forage through their website. Forage will  be offering customers from Cardiff and the Vale the opportunity to purchase high quality, seasonal food. Much of what’s for sale will produced by the Penllyn Estate itself, with an excellent range of carefully selected products from local producers who will also supplying produce to the new beautifully designed restaurant.

“Our mission is to provide fresh, delicious produce in a beautiful, newly constructed setting,” says Managing Partner, Tom Homfray. “Forage will boast an exceptional butchers counter, seasonal vegetables grown on the Estate, eggs from the resident brood of free-range hens, a bakery, and over 2,000 lines of food, drink and other wares. Customers looking to purchase high quality ingredients will be able to seek advice and information from the staff, including the in-house butcher and chef, regarding anything from recipes to food traceability. The bar will be serving Coaltown Coffee, roasted and packed in Ammanford, plus an excellent range of other drinks.”

The beautiful timber-structured building, clad in Siberian Larch, has been designed by an award-winning architect to blend into the surrounding landscape, and sits alongside a recently planted truffle orchard. The whole site boasts stunning views and enjoys a commanding position over the Thaw Valley. “Visitors will be relieved to know there is plenty of free parking,” adds Tom.

Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts, Editor of City Life said: “Cardiff and the Vale will always welcome an establishment of this quality. It’s location, just outside Cowbridge, means that it can be accessible to residents of both Cardiff and the Vale. I have to say, the sympathetic design of the building, and the quality of the offering is exactly what the region needs these days. At City Life, we are constantly championing local producers and independent businesses so this is fantastic news for south Wales. It will be a real asset.”

Once completely open, the coffee bar and restaurant will be serving delicious food and beverages on a takeaway basis. The click and collect (or delivery) service that has been running during the coronavirus pandemic will remain operational, with the range of products available online to be expanded in the very near future. Obviously as soon as lockdown ends, Forage can welcome customers to make full use of the facilities.
