They say that the sun shines on the righteous and shone it certainly did, for most of the day, at the extremely popular St David’s Polo. Set, once again, in the beautiful grounds of Fonmon Castle, it was the perfect day for people (and frock) watching. More on that later with City Life’s resident style guru Suzanne Jaya.

ST DAVID’S POLO

A fabulous day was enjoyed by all as City Life were delighted to host a VIP table at St David’s Polo in the grounds of Fonmon Castle.

Our illustrious guests included Peter Knowles and Andrew Bradshaw of Hamptons of Penarth, super stylish Suzanne Jaya, Mike McNabb, owner of Room for Living Kitchens of Cowbridge and partner Karin Wright, Jane Egan of Designer Desires and her partner, businessman, Richard Case.

We arrived at eleven in the morning and started the day with a refreshing Pimms. Throughout the day and into the evening the champagne flowed freely as did the conversation.

Geoff Lloyd, Chairman of St David’s Polo, was the perfect host, with glamour provided by the effervescent Amanda Protheroe Thomas and Geoff’s partner Michelle Sturgeon. The teams representing on the field were Wales versus South America.

The rain stayed away long enough for a brilliant display of polo and both teams played particularly well. The heavens then decided to refresh us with a spot of light rain but it did not dampen our spirits and there was a mad dash to the marquee and the disco. In no time at all, the dancefloor was packed with gyrating bodies getting on down to the likes of the late, great Michael Jackson and other music legends.

The microphone was even opened up to the floor for some impromtu karaoke and many guests entertained us with some ‘memorable’ vocals. Looking around the marquee, it was fantastic to see everyone having such a good time.

Yes, the polo is an amazing sporting spectacle and, in my opinion, this event is equally about people getting together and just having a ball.

Derek Naylor tells City Life why he loves attending and photographing social events, especially the polo.

“I love the polo. It’s the premiere social event in the Vale and having covered it for a few years now, it’s fantastic to catch up with friends and enjoy the day as well as photographing it. Guests really make an effort, the atmosphere is amazing and the polo match is an exhilarating spectacle that has to been seen to be appreciated fully. Lots of familiar faces, wonderful outfits, charming celebs, fabulous hospitality... it’s a great day out.”

STYLE

City Life style Polo picks

1 Keep it in the family Not sure if they’re related but they certainly have a style connection. Watch out girls, the mum’s hot and understatedly elegant and comfortable in her own skin. A great role model.

2 Bags of style at the Beeb Sian Lloyd here in an elegant frock that drapes her beautifully, without revealing more than she should and yet allowing her warm smile to come through.

3 No thorns here All roses... don’t the boys scrub up well too? Is that a Diane Von Furstenberg – love it!

4 A touch of class What I love about this is their attention to detail, great grooming and a confident attitude. Particularly loving the black dress and turquoise shoes and the lady on the far right in the classic black and white ensemble. Real head-turners all of you.

5 Bezzie mates Sometimes style has nothing to do with the clothes – just pure joyous, genuine laughter – how could you not love them?

6 Are you sure this isn’t Glastonbury? Not a brolly in sight, yet these two are having the best time and looking confident and sassy sheltering under what looks like a Barbour! Like your style girls!

Right I’d dye for that dress The lady third from the left certainly got it covered – cute, flirty tie dye frock that speaks volumes with no need to shout about it
