Look good naturally at Fragrant 227
If you’re concerned with what you’re putting on your skin and would prefer products that are organic and ethically harvested, without chemicals and harmful preservatives, then Fragrant 227 in Rhiwbina has all your concerns covered.
Fragrant 227 opened in 1990 and offers skin treatments and complimentary health in a luxurious boutique setting.
Owner Jinette Pitten originally trained in beauty therapy in London and holds the Cidesco diploma. She was the principal teacher at a Madame Korners salon in Sydney before opening her own clinics in Perth, Australia, Auckland, New Zealand and then Cardiff. Her passion since 1980 has been aromatherapy - and this is reflected in the many treatments offered at Fragrant 227. Don’t just take our word for it, Heath resident Fenella Bowden tells us why she’s been going there on a monthly basis for the last ten years.
Fenella, please tell us a little bit about yourself?
I had to take early retirement in 1999 as a result of major spinal problems. I decided that life was not over and that it was important to make sure that I looked and felt good about myself.
Why do you go to Fragrant 227? Going to the clinic every month really helped with this as not only did it help with my skin, and self-perception, it also helped to keep my muscles as relaxed as possible. I regard it as vital to my sense of well-being and would not want to be without it.
What kind of treatments do you enjoy there?
I have monthly facials - Jinette usually decides what type I need depending on how I am feeling; what the season is etc. These will be Decleor or Ren - both fabulous. I also have a back massage. If there is a special occasion such as a wedding, I will have additional treatments to ensure that I feel good, relaxed, and that my skin looks well maintained. As a County Councillor, there are certain times (such as during elections!) when I really need to de-stress. That’s when I go for additional leg massage treatments to help me cope with the additional demands and pressures of my job.
Why Fragrant 227 in particular?
It is peaceful. A heavenly scent surrounds you the moment you enter the clinic. Laure and Joanne are extremely well trained, offering expert advice and nothing is too much trouble. The products are just wonderful! I am a complete convert to the Decleor skin care range and use most of the products. I also use Ren and Dr Haushka products and I’m a really big fan of the Jane Iredale cosmetic range. I love the purity and the quality of the products - and my skin feels wonderful afterwards. The perfumes and candles are just gorgeous - I won’t buy them anywhere else!

Wyatt’s has something for everyone!
Wyatt’s Home and Garden in Pontcanna really does have something for everyone looking to add style and interest to individual rooms or the entire home – and not forgetting that all important room, the garden!

Owner Jane Wyatt can source specific items from an eclectic mix of furniture ranging from antiques to collectables, Danish and French home-ware, right through to garden accessories and many more exquisite items for both home and garden.
Wyatt’s of Ledbury has a loyal following and the recently opened shop in Pontcanna can now boast the same claim. We chatted to Wyatt’s devotee Anna Roberts about the shop’s appeal.
How long have you been going to Wyatt’s?
I first went to the Ledbury shop about two years ago and loved it, so it was great news when Jane said that she had plans to open in Cardiff. The shop’s just around the corner from me in Pontcanna.
What do you like about Wyatt’s?
I love the fact that if I need to buy a present for someone I can always find something at Wyatt’s. I’ve bought gifts there for birthdays and weddings. I just love the furniture and I’ve asked Jane to keep an eye out for certain pieces that I need when she goes to an auction or a house clearance. She makes a note of the items people want and keeps a lookout. Jane’s a real character so it’s always fun to go in the shop but she’s not at all pushy which I like. She knows a lot about the old pieces she has there and always has a story to tell. In fact, all the people she has working for her in both shops are just lovely.
What was the last item you bought at Wyatt’s?
I bought a really lovely, unusual door mat as a house warming present for someone! Before that, I bought a gorgeous pewter butter dish as a wedding present. I’ve coveted almost every sofa she’s had in there but I just don’t have room for another! I wish I was starting from scratch in a way because I could furnish the whole house from Wyatt’s.
Would you recommend Wyatt’s to your friends and family?
Yes, I’ve definitely been recommending Wyatt’s to all my friends and family and they’ve had the same sort of luck as me when buying gifts there. A friend of mine was looking for a narrow antique wardrobe so I told them to go and see the one I’d spotted in the shop. I think that’s the beauty of the place - you’ll find some unusual pieces of furniture that no-one else will have.
Anna is the Head of Training at a charity called The Thomson Foundation in Cardiff which supports and trains journalists from developing countries.

Rachel opens new Hair Studio
We were very excited to learn that a new hair salon is opening soon in Pontcanna although not as excited as The Hair Studio’s new owner, Rachel Williams, who can’t wait to open the doors to clients familiar with her work and of course new clients.

Congratulations on your new venture Rachel. When does The Hair Studio open for business?
Thank you. I’m really excited about opening. Hopefully it will be sometime in September.
Why Pontcanna?
When I researched the Cardiff area, Pontcanna with its coffee quarter, boutiques, interiors shops, and up market jewellery shop, it was an obvious place to consider. I will be the only salon on Cathedral Road, so I’m hoping that a customer base will follow, especially with the passing trade.
Will you be having a launch?
A launch will come but we’re waiting for the right time.
Why did you decide to call it The Hair Studio?
The Hair Studio was an obvious title for me, as it’s straight to the point and also ties in quite nicely with the other family business a few doors down, The Jewellery Studio.

Where did you acquire your skills?
At the age of 15, I went to work for The Hair Business in Cowbridge. I was one of their top stylists, learning everything there that I know today.
The training I received there taught me the cutting, colouring and hair up skills. In later years, I was responsible for training the younger recruits. I involve myself in all aspects of hairdressing. I’ve gained a reputation for my cutting skills and my ability to do hair extensions. I also get a lot of satisfaction for creating hair up styles for events such as weddings.
Which products will you be using?
La Biosthetique is the product line I’ve found. It’s based on the individual con dition of your scalp, as well as on the development phases of your hair. It strengthens and supports the hair’s natural lifecycle, ideally balances out nutritional deficits in the hair roots and thus results in full, healthy and shiny hair. I’m very excited about it as I will be the first one in Cardiff to have it and I believe it’s the most up to date range available. It supports what I believe in, which is strong, healthy hair and that’s why I will be also offering hair and scalp treatments to give customers problem solvers to great homecare for use in between visits.
Will it be a female only salon?
No, I will be open to women, men and children. I’m equally as enthusiastic with men’s hair and I’m always willing to cut children’s hair.
Will you be working alone or will you have staff?
Initially I will be working alone, but I look forward to finding the right staff to join me. I want to start small and grow steadily. I love what I do and I would want my staff to feel the same!
