WYATT’S MAKES A HOUSE A HOME...
Wyatt’s is a place where you can go and easily spend an hour just browsing and having a chat with owner Jane Wyatt or a member of her staff.
How is Wyatt’s settling in to Pontcanna?
We felt a part of the community right from the start. Luckily for us a few other new businesses opened at the same time as us (Flowers with a Twist and Limelight hair salon) and, of course, the Cameo underwent a transformation so we felt very much part of something new and fresh as well as receiving a big welcome from the existing businesses. We all seem to work together well and this end of Pontcanna Street has come alive. I think the ‘lifestyle’ represented by Wyatt’s fits in very well with the area and we have a great many friendly regulars among the locals.
Who comes to Wyatt’s?
Our customers are from far and wide and the wide ranging stock we hold attracts a wide ranging fan base. Our regular customers often send or bring friends and family to the shop knowing they’ll find something a bit different. They seem keen to spread the word about Wyatt’s, which is a big compliment. People come not only seeking a special gift, luxury item, or antique piece but knowing that we stock lots of useful stuff like linen tea towels, oak doorstops and fab giant balls of twine for gardeners.
What products are you offering for spring/summer?
Our stock is constantly changing and at this time of year we’ll be looking to add to the rich, warm colours of the french country kitchen, which are ever popular, and aiming to bring the outside in with fresh blues and greens. We’ve some really pretty blue and white china from Powell Craft which would look really summery on a table laid for tea in the garden and plenty of lanterns and tealight holders to add romance and atmosphere to an al fresco evening meal. With spring weddings in mind we have some great ideas for wedding presents from Welsh wool and cashmere throws and picnic rugs to stunning stone glass-domed cheeseboards.
What will be best sellers?
Talking of weddings, the Welsh are a romantic lot and buy any hearts we can provide them with. We rise to the challenge and offer them heartshaped baskets, dishes, tealight holders, coasters and all sorts of decorative hanging hearts. Not quite so romantic, I know, but we have a funky range of doormats which are fun and colourful and always popular.
Our oil cloth also sells well. It drapes like cloth and is machine-washable but is liquid and stain resistant. Customers use this for all sorts of things like table - cloths, blinds and covers for outdoor cushions. The designs are very pretty too and you might guess that the patterns with hearts sell very well!
What do you think customers love about Wyatt’s?
Hopefully, they like the whole shopping experience as we try to be friendly and welcoming. It’s a real browsing place with bits and bobs tucked away in corners. It’s sometimes hard even for the staff to remember where they last saw something. There’s an eclectic mix of old and new with a touch of wit so beautiful antique furniture sits, happily, alongside french kitchen paraphernalia and a cute collection of chickens and ducks. We try to keep our window fresh and entertaining and hope people find it inspiring. We even had a full sized sheep in the window for a while. He was a real talking point. His name is Brian and he now lives inside the shop where he gets a lot of attention from our small visitors. Yes, he is for sale. Every home should have one!

Interiors service?
I love the thrill of the chase and I am never happier than when asked to source something for a customer. This could be anything from a church pew to a dressing table. With my experience in my Ledbury shop and designing my holiday cottages, as well as helping customers design their decor I am happy to bring this service to Cardiff. I love to talk to people and get an idea of what they like and then help them achieve the look in their own home. I find this part of the business very satisfying.
Do you gift wrap?
Yes, of course, if you’re buying a gift for someone elese or treating yourself we will be happy to gift wrap it for you. Wrapping the sheep may be a challenge but we would rise to it!
