Don't rush into sowing seeds outdoors or splurging on summer bedding plants just yet until you've seen what's available at Pugh's Garden Centre in Radyr. Known for their quality and variety of plants, gifts and horticultural sundries, together with a team of knowledgeable staff, Pugh's is...

BLOOMING LOVELY!

City Life talks to Graham Pugh about what makes Pugh's Garden Centre such a popular choice for gardeners of all abilities.

How long has Pugh's Garden Centre been established?

The company goes back as far as the 1930's when Sidney Pugh established Wenallt Nurseries in Rhiwbina. This was very much along the lines of a conventional market garden and smallholding producing bedding plants, fruit and vegetables. It even boasted a small dairy. The business then expanded to include fruit and vegetable shops. With Cardiff expanding, Morganstown and Radyr was considered as an area of great potential for a horticultural business, especially with the development of the Castle View housing estate.

With the site secured, 'Ty Nant Nurseries' was opened opposite the Ty Nant Inn and the nursery soon built up a thriving trade as interest in gardening developed, especially as the trend became to sell plants in containers rather than 'bare root'.

Why Radyr?
Radyr was the perfect choice for us. We're accessible from Junction 32 of the M4 and the A470 Cardiff to valleys road and all the suburbs in North Cardiff which makes us ideally located to serve Cardiff and surrounding areas.

What makes Pugh's Garden Centre different?

The business has grown with the introduction of stand-alone concessions which has created the Garden Village concept, providing a network of local and national businesses all relating to home, garden and outdoor living. We believe that we have a unique concept with 'Pugh's Garden Village'. Customers can enjoy a relaxed and individual experience in the knowledge that most of what they will need, they can find here in one place, rather than having to shop around at several stores in different locations.

What other businesses are on site?
We have Maidenhead Aquatics, PamPurredPets, The Bay Tree Coffee Shop, Quality Building Ltd, Carol's Crafts, Cotton Traders, Bridges Veterinary Surgery, The Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Delta Garden and Conservatory Furniture. Recently, Heatforce, a well established company with 30 years' experience supplying Environmental Energy Solutions for homes has joined us. They've opened a new retail showroom with fires and surrounds featuring all that is new in sustainable, renewable energy solutions for the home. These include solar panels, air to air and air to water heating systems. We're delighted to have them on board.

The farm shop has been open a year now, has this been successful?
Yes, the success of the Ty Nant Farm Shop has proved better than we could have dreamed of. We pride ourselves on offering a good range of Welsh produce; fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses and meats, much of which is organic. We thought it would be popular locally but I'm surprised by the distances people will travel to shop here. We offer an excellent range of freshly frozen produce as well such as berries and vegetables. These are popular because customers can buy them by the scoop to the weight they require. We also have a good range of preserves and freshly baked bread. One of our most popular offerings is local beers and ales. I can't imagine why!

What's new for 2010?
We're very excited to be launching our new online club. Customers can register online with us at pughsgv.qvonline.co.uk and receive exclusive money saving vouchers for plants and sundries. They will also receive details and prior notice of special events, useful seasonal gardening tips, plant of the month details and special offers. We're expecting a great deal of interest in this as it will help us connect with customers and find out exactly what they want from us and, in turn, we will be able to reward customers for shopping in Pugh's Garden Village.
