ST DAVID’S HALL, CARDIFF
The Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms Cardiff

The Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms Cardiff concert season returns to St David’s Hall this summer with an exciting programme of 13 concerts in just 14 days. From Saturday 12 to Saturday 26 July, Cardiff will be filled with the sound of world-class music in a special Proms celebration of 25 years of the National Concert Hall of Wales.

This year The Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms Cardiff boasts some of the biggest names in classical music with Bryn Terfel and Grammy Nominated Rebecca Evans taking to the stage in the Choral Prom (19 July). Other soloists include violinist Tasmin Little who will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto (17 July) and pianists Angela Hewitt in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 23 (18 July) and Freddy Kempf in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 5 (25 July). Maya Kock takes centre stage with her violin in the Lloyds TSB Last Night of the Welsh Proms which includes a programme of Strauss, Vaughan Williams and Elgar and, of course, that patriotic party atmosphere that the last night of The Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms Cardiff always brings.

The Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms Cardiff will feature three conductors this year, including the season’s Artistic Director Owain Arwel Hughes OBE conducting six of the evening orchestral concerts, as well as Thierry Fischer with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (23 July) and a return for Michael Bell with the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra in the ever-popular Children’s Prom (12 July).

The Children’s Prom, with special guest narrator Sarah-Jane Honeywell, is one of three concerts especially for younger music lovers. The others being the Primary Prom for 5-9 year-olds with a special event Mozart (3 July) and the ever-popular Tiddly Prom returning by popular demand for 6 performances on 18 - 20 July.

In addition to the orchestral performances, the 2008 season at St David’s Hall brings the first ever Gamelan Prom (12 July) followed by the Folk Prom (22 July) starring England’s finest roots duo Show of Hands.

St David’s Hall’s mammoth pipe organ, one of the largest in Wales, gets a rare outing in the Organ Prom (21 July) at a special lunchtime performance from Thomas Trotter, one of the UK’s bestloved organists.
