Rugby kids thrilled by Scarlets visit
MORE than 200 young Vale of Glamorgan rugby players enjoyed a special visit by two stars of Wales and the Scarlets.
The junior members of Llantwit Major RFC, near Bridgend, were given tips from the top by hooker Matthew Rees and prop Iestyn Thomas. Their visit was part of a junior section training day for the Vale club and reflects a long-standing tie-up with the Scarlets.
The club takes part in the Scarlets matchday ticket cash back scheme which has enabled the purchase of new kit for the junior section. Llantwit have become one of the Scarlets leading cash back clubs since they first participated in a half-time tag rugby game three years ago.
Llantwit Major RFC run senior and youth teams along with a flourishing junior section with squads for all ages from eight-16.
It is thought that the club dates from 1880. It became a full member of the WRU in 1962 and the senior side now plays in Swalec League Division Four South East.
The Scarlets, meanwhile, are about to move to the £23m Parc y Scarlets after leaving Stradey Park, their home of 129 years. Their first game at the new ground is on November 28 against Munster in the Magners League.
Matthew Rees, 28, has played for the Scarlets since 2004 and has more than 20 international caps. He was named in the Wales starting XV against South Africa on November 8. Iestyn Thomas, 32, has been with the Scarlets since 2003 and has 33 caps.
