DAVID BELLAMY OPENS SOUTH WALES
ART SOCIETY'S 121 ST ANNUAL EXHIBITION IN CARDIFF
Wilderness artist and author David Bellamy will open the annual summer exhibition of the South Wales Art Society (SWAS) at the Old Library, Cardiff, at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 8 June 2010. This is the 121 st annual exhibition to be staged by the Society, founded in 1887, and the first to be opened by David Bellamy who accepted the role of President earlier this year.
Jan Robinson, SWAS Chair, says: 'The SWAS summer exhibition is the flagship event in our annual calendar and we are delighted that our new President, David Bellamy, has agreed to open it this year. The Old Library is a stunning venue for the exhibition and our members are very excited to have the opportunity to show their work there.'
The upstairs gallery of this historic building in The Hayes will host upward of 100 works by artists from across South Wales. Most will be available for sale. All works included are selected by a panel of acclaimed judges and prizes are awarded for the highest scoring entries in up to nine categories, ranging from figurative to abstract and including portraiture, still life, landscape and sculpture/3D. The Society also presents a Visitors' Choice award to the artist whose work receives the most votes from members of the public.
Now in its 122nd year, the SWAS membership includes both professional and amateur artists, who meet fortnightly throughout the year for critiques, demonstrations and lectures, as well as in weekly workshops. Members will be on hand from 10am to 4pm daily at the Old Library show to answer questions about the art on display. The exhibition continues until 27 June and admission is free.
The society welcomes new members. Details of this and all aspects of its activities will be available at the show.
