Julie Perkins is Director of Jewels Canley Interiors on Whitchurch Road. City Life persuaded the self confessed workaholic and Eastenders fan to down tools for ten minutes.

THE LAST WORD

What do you like about working in Whitchurch Road?
It's got every type of shop you could imagine and is very accessible. It's one of those places people tend to find by accident but are pleasantly surprised when they do.

Do you live locally?
I live in a farmhouse in a small hamlet called Picketston in the Vale of Glamorgan.

What do you like to do in your downtime?
I must confess to being a workaholic but enjoy chilling out with a glass of G & T or a nice glass of red while watching Eastenders (if I get home in time!). I also like to work on my own home.

What's your favourite restaurant?
The Mughal Emperor on the outskirts of Cowbridge - for its lovely Bangladeshi and Indian food. Lovely people and I love the decor!

How's business?
Very good. This is our busiest time of the year leading up to Christmas so, happily, lots of overtime!

Where do the majority of your customers come from?

We do a lot of business in the Cardiff area and I seem to be in Penarth quite a bit these days plus the rest of the Vale.

Whose involved in the business?
Both my daughters - Candice and Hayley, and my husband Jim. Candice deals with most of the admin and customers on the phone. Hayley looks after clients in the shop, helping with room designs and also likes to dabble in furniture design.

Jim runs the woodwork workshop which is in one of our buildings at home, making pelmets, headboards, footstools and any odd thing I need! Then there's our workroom staff, upholsterers Chris and Kevin and our sewing machinists Dawn and Christina. We have a great team.

What services do you offer?
You name I'll do it! (laughs). Reupholstery, curtain making, blinds, track fitting (including electric), bespoke sofas and chairs, bespoke radiator covers, carpet fitting and decorating. All of which we provide as individual services or as a complete interior design package which I project manage.

You've recently undertaken a revamp, how's that changed the business?
We've had a really good response to the new frontage - everyone loves my topiary balls! We've certainly enjoyed much more passing trade as we stand out a lot more than before.

It's a great shame that Maskreys is closing just down the road, how do you feel about that?
It was a huge shock and really quite sad, I know a lot of people that work there as we have done work for them for many years. I suppose we will gain customers because of it but I can't help thinking Cardiff has lost an institution.
