Meeting over the perfect cup of coffee with friends during the day or for cocktails on a night out calls for just the right environment and, thanks to Giovanni Malacrino, our prayers have been answered in the shape of his new lounge bar and club Amici, a sophisticated playground in the heart of Cardiff.

AMORE AMICI

Giovanni, congratulations on the launch of Amici. How's it going?
Very well, thank you. It was a bit fraught during the building works and with running the two restaurants, but I'm very happy with how it's turned out. It looks just as I imagined and our customers seem to like it.

What can customers expect?
By day it's a great place to meet for coffee and croissants. Ladies might be out shopping and fancy lunch, perhaps an Italian style tapas or just a break between boutiques with a chilled glass of wine. We have many professional people who use Amici's for that all important business meeting. In the evening, the mood changes. Customers can enjoy a classic cocktail after work. Perhaps meet some friends for a pre or aftershow drink or just simply unwind with fine champagne and great chill out music. Thursdays we have live jazz, and Friday and Saturday, there's an exclusive club with top DJ's where customers can relax or dance until the small hours.

Who are your customers?

In the daytime, they can be ladies who lunch, business people, couples or single people looking to escape the madness of the city. As the night unfolds, we see couples and groups of friends looking to enjoy a night out in a safe and sophisticated environment. The impressive long bar lights up and comes to life while our guests enjoy the sounds of the resident DJ. No house music can be found here but good, honest soul, disco and Motown.

What can you offer to corporate and businesspeople?

We have a projector to display company logos, branding and messages as clients enter the stairway. We also have the latest big screen TV's displaying the news and there's also a WI-FI connection.

The area is divided into different 'zones'. Please describe them.
I believe that people like their own 'areas' in which they can enjoy the company of their friends or acquaintances. We have one area with a sunken table, another with leather sofas and tables, and an exclusive area for members with a cabinet of their own champagne. We also have a lobster tank and a wine cellar with vintage wines and champagnes.

Speaking of memberships, how do they work?
