AROUND THE CITY

We’ll bring you stories from all across Cardiff over forthcoming issues. Here’s a few stories we thought you may find interesting.

  CITYWIDE
In the mix with Silver Gospel Runners

Who are you and what do you do?
We’re Silver Gospel Runners, from various locations around the UK but Cardiff based, with seven band members: James, Kevin, Andy, Owen, Isaac, myself and John. We have the usual guitars, bass and drums, but also more quirky instruments, such as trumpet, melodica, toy piano, glockenspiel and a keytar, and we’re always on the look out for new instruments to bring into the mix.

When did you get together and why?
We’ve only been together as a sevenpiece for about a year now, with members gradually joining here and there. With the exception of John the trumpeter, who interviewed us on a student radio show, we all met from internet or music shop adverts.

The idea was to keep adding to the band to build up a really hearty sound with a wide array of instruments, and also to challenge local venues and sound technicians to see if we can all fit on the stage or have enough microphones!

How would you describe your music?
Basically, we write interesting, breezy, toe tapping numbers about all sorts of things. It’s quite hard to describe our music exactly, but a local reviewer claimed we sounded like “A coked up Belle and Sebastian having a fight with an off the wagon Pete Doherty”, which we think is pretty accurate.

Who inspires you?
Any artistes whom we’ve accidentally stolen lyrics/melodies from!

Any exciting developments?

We’ve entered the competition to open the Green Man Festival, so we’d be eternally grateful for any votes!

Are you for hire and how much?
It would depend on the location and timescale really, as it tends to get a little tricky coordinating seven people, but we would consider it, yes.
